One challenging thing living with schizoaffective disorder is to deal with misconceptions. People often assume that it is either purely schizophrenia or purely mood disorder. They don’t even realize that it is a complex mix and can shift daily. Some think that symptoms are always visible. However, it is a reality that many struggle quietly and professionally with ongoing internal battles.

There is also a misunderstanding about what stable actually means. It takes tremendous effort to maintain routines, communicate socially or leave the house for some. Others feel that sensitivity, creativity or emotion regulation challenges are mistaken.

We always wish that others should know how much thought and strength goes into managing simple tasks.

If you are supposed to tell people one thing about schizoaffective disorder, do write here what would it be.

Every day; I explain to individuals diagnosed with Schizoaffective disorder that their symptoms will fluctuate. The individuals will always have a battle to fight, but often they are not able to see it. I discuss that finding stability will require consistent effort and that even simple tasks will often require more effort than normal.
