Many with schizophrenia use grounding techniques and claims that it helps in staying connected to the present when symptoms, stress or overwhelming thoughts starts taking over. It is true that grounding can help in reducing anxiety, confusion or giving a feel that reality is slipping away.

Some of the most common techniques are focusing on the senses like naming things which you can see, hear, touch, smell or taste and holding something textured or cold to bring back the attention to your body. Others claim that breathing exercises, repeating calming phrases or visualizing a safe space works better for them. Walking, stretching, listening to music and some more such simple routines also serve as grounding strategies.

Please share what grounding techniques you use and which methods work better for specific situations.

When experiencing distress, one way to help ground yourself is by using calming techniques. For me personally, this means taking deep breaths, feeling the textures of various objects around me, or simply naming the things I can see at that moment. Also helpful are short walks or listening to music with a steady beat.
