Have you experienced Akathisia from antipsychotic medication? What really helped?

Akathisia can feel unbearable. You may constantly feel like you have to move. However, nothing seems to calm the unrest. People often describe it as being trapped inside a restless body. Some try strategies like pacing, stretching or walking. Others find that mild physical activity sometimes helps them in taking the edge off.

Many claim that adjusting medication dose or switching meds under the supervision of a psychiatrist has made the biggest difference. Some doctors prescribe beta blockers or anti-anxiety medication. This is just an add-ons to reduce Akathisia. Others have felt relief after spreading doses over the day.

Have you found anything that helped reduce it. How did you bring it up with your doctor? Do share below.

Akathisia was absolutely awful for me. I had it every waking moment. I told my phychiatrist what it felt like before I knew the word for it and I was prescribed a beta blocker and it worked perfectly. I immediately noticed a difference and the Akathisia was gone. Do you know the science behind why beta blockers work for some people to reduce Akathisia?

At the first sign of feeling restless or uneasy, I communicate with my doctor. Discussing my symptoms early allows us to have a more productive and easy-going conversation. I make sure to explain how my restlessness feels and how long I experience it for.
