The development of schizophrenia is not static, it is lifelong, with alterations in the individual’s presentation of symptoms, treatment needs, and coping methods as he/she ages. Subjects with schizophrenia may experience a decrease in the number of severe episodes they suffer from in their later life. A person with schizophrenia may also develop secondary problems such as cognitive decline or physical illness with time. To successfully adjust to these changes and maintain a high quality of life, continued support, as well as medication and lifestyle modifications, will be necessary.
