What Helps You to Recover Following a Bad Episode

Recovering after a bad episode is mostly challenging. It is challenging physically as well as emotionally. Many with schizoaffective disorder say that the first step is to simply give themselves permission to rest. Sleep, proper meals and a calm environment may help both mind and body to start feeling stable once again.

Some find helpful in returning back to small and manageable routines. They don’t try to do everything at once. Simple tasks like showering, tidying up or taking a short walk even creates a sense of normalcy. Others claim to rely on journaling or tracking symptoms.

It is not to forget that support from trusted friends, family or peers often makes a big difference. Simply having someone to talk to can help in reducing stress and even make recovery feel less overwhelming. Therapy or counselling sessions simultaneously can provide guidance on coping strategies.

Grounding techniques, music, hobbies or creative outlets also helps in regaining focus.

I’ve experienced the same feelings following a negative experience, so I understand the impact of such experiences on one’s day-to-day activities. After experiencing a rough episode, I take time off from doing everything. I take time to slow everything down, relax, eat some good meals, sleep longer and allow my mind to settle.
