Can Early Intervention Make a Difference in Schizophrenia

It has been usually learned that getting help early can make a good difference for people with schizophrenia. A couple of early supports include starting treatment sooner, learning coping skills early and having right support ahead of things get too overwhelming.

I am curious to know what others think on this. Do you know anyone who experienced significant change by getting help early? It can be like understanding symptoms, keeping things more stable or avoiding bigger problems.

It is a truth that not everyone gets diagnosed quickly. Not everyone gets right help right away. Hence, the whole journey becomes tougher for them. So, I am wondering if early support really makes day-to-day experience easier to manage.

I can speak from personal experience. I got help one month into my first episode (hospitalization), and my aunt happens to work in mental health and recommended I go to a particular clinic. They had a program specifically catered to schizophrenia. 8 months into care I went into remission.

Support from loved ones is just as important. They can ground you if you trust their perception more than your own. which can be very scary.

Those of us lucky enough to have support usually have an easier time managing symptoms. My heart breaks for the schizophrenics of this world that go without support.

Thanks @CopperViper for sharing your personal experience. It really helps to hear real stories and even it is good to learn that getting help early made such a big difference. Yes, having someone by your side whom you trust makes a huge difference. Not everyone gets this kind of help and you are right that it is a painful part for them.

You were lucky that you had a clinic and family to understood you about what you were going through. Again I say, it is really nice to hear stories where early care and support works as supposed to be.

I think early support absolutely makes a difference. I developed schizophrenia in elementary school, but didn't receive mental healthcare until my twenties when I could seek it out on my own. A lot of trauma, heartache, and damage to my physical health could have been avoided had I been helped sooner. Going untreated for a decade does a lot to a person. I don't know how I survived. I imagine it's the same for other folks in my position.

Welcome to the forum @Sorbet
I honestly don't know when my schizophrenia symptoms started I thought I just had social anxiety and depression growing up

I watched as my friend who got support early learned to recognise and manage his triggers before they became problematic, making things much simpler for him. I began seeking help later and have felt a significant difference from that experience. While early support is not a cure-all for everything, it does provide more sensation of control and less sensation of fear; that is a huge advantage in my daily life.
