Social interactions can be draining. These can be draining even when people are kind and familiar. Conversations require extra focus, emotional regulation and even masking symptoms for many living with schizophrenia disorder. What may look normal on the outside often takes a lot of internal effort. It is exhaustion and may lead to withdrawal. People around us usually misunderstands as disinterest.

It is simply a need to recharge mentally. Understanding the balance is important. Connection of course matters but even rest matters.

Please share how you manage social fatigue? Do you take planned breaks during gatherings? Have you found by now the ways to explain such needs to friends or family?

Let us share what helps us in navigating social life without feeling overwhelmed. Others here might benefit from your approach.

Most of the time, social fatigue is difficult to notice. Many people manage their social fatigue by spacing out their interactions. Several people take quick breaks during large group events to catch their breathe (reset) and recover from over-excitement. On the other hand, some people will create boundaries prior to having any social gatherings in order to avoid becoming too overwhelmed.
