How to develop hobbies?

I have anhedonia and have trouble enjoying things. I am on an antidepressant as well as the schizophrenia medications but it only kind of works. Any tips?

A lot of people don’t realize:
  • Anhedonia can be a side effect, not a permanent change.
  • Sometimes the dose is simply too high for your brain.
  • Some meds cause more emotional flattening than others.
Common things doctors will consider:
  • Lowering the dose
  • Switching to a different medication
  • Adding something that boosts motivation/energy (non-stimulant options exist)
  • Trying split dosing or taking it at a different time
You don’t need to diagnose yourself — just say:

“I feel flat and can’t enjoy anything. Could this be medication-related?”

Your brain might need “re-teaching” what pleasure feels like. Try:
  • Explore new hobbies, even if they feel empty at first (taste can slowly return)
  • Low-effort sensory things: warm shower, music, flavored drinks
  • 10 minutes of sunlight or a walk — microdoses of dopamine
  • Rewatching familiar shows (nostalgia activates different pathways)
Think of it like physical therapy for your reward system.

It’s really strong of you to keep seeking ways to improve, even when enjoyment feels distant. Small moments of interest count, and they can slowly build. With patience, gentle routines, and support, many people do notice gradual changes.
